Atracurium besylate is a white to yellow-white powder with slight hygroscopicity. It is soluble in water and very soluble in ethanol, acetonitri le and dichlorometha ne. It contains three isomers: cis-cis, cis-trans and trans-trans.

Function and Application of Atracurium CAS 64228-79-1

Atracurium (CAS 64228-79-1) is a non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent used in anesthesia to induce muscle relaxation during surgical procedures. It works by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscles, leading to muscle paralysis.

Function:
Atracurium is a competitive antagonist of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, which means it blocks the action of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contraction. Atracurium works by binding to the nicotinic receptors in the motor endplate, preventing the binding of acetylcholine and thus blocking nerve impulses. This leads to muscle relaxation and paralysis.

Applications:
Atracurium is used as an adjunct to anesthesia to induce muscle relaxation during surgical procedures. It is often used in conjunction with other anesthetic drugs, such as propof ol or opioids, to ensure adequate anesthesia and muscle relaxation during surgery. Atracurium has a shorter duration of action compared to other neuromuscular blocking agents, which makes it a good option for shorter surgical procedures. It is also preferred in patients with liver and kidney disease, as it is metabolized and excreted mainly by the plasma cholinesterase and has minimal hepatic or renal metabolism.
