Borax is a colorless crystal, weathering in air, heating to 400 ~ 500ºC can be dehydrated into anhydrous sodium tetraborate, melting into glass at 878ºC. Because the melt contains acid oxide B2O3, it can dissolve metal oxides. This property can be used to remove oxides on the metal surface when welding gold . Many metal oxides dissolved in molten borax often show characteristic colors, such as cobalt metaborate Co(BO2)2 is blue, nickel metaborate Ni(BO2)2 is brown, chromium metaborate Cr(BO2)3 is emerald, etc.

Use
Mainly used in glass and enamel industry. In the glass, the transmission of ultraviolet light can be enhanced, and the transparency and heat resistance of the glass can be improved. In enamel products, it can make the glaze not easy to fall off and make it shiny. It is also widely used in special optical glass, glass fiber, non-ferrous metal welding agent, jewelry binder, printing and dyeing, washing (silk and wool fabrics, etc.), gold refining, cosmetics, pesticides, fertilizers, borax soap, preservatives, antifreeze and disinfectants for medical purposes. It is also one of the basic raw materials for making other boron compounds, almost all boron-containing compounds can be made by borax, they are widely used in metallurgy, machinery, light industry, textile, electronics, chemical  and other sectors.
