An overview of the

1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) is a derivative of cyclopropene. At room temperature, it behaves as a gas and is a small cycloolefin with very active properties.   1-methylcyclopropene is a synthetic plant growth regulator which has been widely used commercially.

The discovery of 1-MCP's ethylene inhibition came from the laboratory of Edward Sic Chemical Booksler and Sylvia Brankenship of North Carolina State University, who jointly hold the corresponding patent.   Cyclopropene is probably a photoactivated product of DACP inhibiting ethylene.   In the 1990s, Sisler found that 1-MCP is a practical cyclopropene derivative because it is less volatile than cyclopropene itself. 3-MCP is also an effective inhibitor, but requires higher concentrations than 1-MCP to function.
