What is 4-butylresorcinol?
4-butylresorcinol is a chemical used to treat hyperpigmentation of the epidermis. Hyperpigmentation is believed
to be related to the enzyme tyrosinase which produces melanin. Among several chemicals known to inhibit
tyrosinase production,such as arbutin, and kojic acid, 4-butylresorcinol has been found to be the most powerful
inhibitor by a wide margin.
4-Butylresorcinol is a strong inhibitor of tyrosinase and peroxidase, effective as skin lightener and ever-tone for
normal and hyper-pigmented skin and even suitable for Melasma treatment.
Application&Function
4-n-Butylresorcinol is a resorcinol derivative that inhibits both tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP
It may be used to decrease skin irritation and is also known to inhibit melanin production. Its hypopigmenting
action was first reported in 1995, and many following studies have documented its efficacy and safety in melasma
treatment with the 0.1% cream, but there is paucity of clinical studies that used the 0.3% cream. The biochemical
assay on inhibition of human tyrosinase activity has revealed the superiority of 4-n-butylresorcinol over other
hypopigmenting agents. Many studies show good efficacy and safety in treating melisma. 4-Butylresorcinol is
considered a potential Cytochrome P450 inhibitor. It can cause hypopigmentation due to its direct inhibition of
tyrosinase.
4-Butylresorcinol is an efficient skin whitening and brightening agent with the following effects:
1. Strong inhibitors of tyrosinase and peroxidase;
2. Effective skin whitening agent and skin toner;
3. Effective whitening agent for pigmentation skin;
4. Effective against chloasma (skin with excessive pigmentation when exposed to sunlight);
5. It is proved to have anti saccharification effect.
