Chromium trichloride (chemical formula: CrCl3) is a commonly used mordant and catalyst, easy deliquescence, easy sublimation, easy oxidation by oxygen at high temperature. There are two kinds of water and hexahydrate.

Anhydrous chromium trichloride is an important raw material in organometallic chemistry.   Many organic chromium compounds can be prepared with it as raw materials, such as diphenyl chromium similar to ferrocene in structure.   Chromium trichloride is also the starting material for many chromium (III) complexes.
