Tea tree ( Camellia sinensis ) is a shrub or small arbor of the genus Camellia in the Camellia family. Green tea is made from unfermented new leaves or buds of tea trees through multiple processes. EGCG is a type of plant-based compound called catechin. As potent #antioxidants it may protect against cellular damage caused by free radicals. Additionally, research suggests that EGCG may reduce inflammation and prevent certain chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes , and some cancers . EGCG is a potent antiviral catechin that helps people recover from mild illness, reduces the risk of disease progression, and inhibits disease transmission. EGCG can be retained in the pharynx and larynx by oral EGCG or EGCG laryngeal spray and can effectively neutralize SARS-CoV-2 and almost completely eliminate SARS-CoV-2-induced cytopathic effects and plaque formation by inhibiting the splicing of spines/RBD with ACE2, as well as the activity of Mpro and Nsp15. In addition, EGCG is a pleiotropic molecule capable of inhibiting oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, cytokine storm, thrombosis, sepsis, and pulmonary fibrosis in the elderly who are more affected by the virus, and is therefore able to reduce the severity of COVID-19 |
