Promethazine hydrochloride (NSC-231688) is a first-generation antihistamine, a potent H1 receptor antagonist and mAChR antagonist, and also has a certain affinity for 5-HT2A, 5-HT2C, D2 and _alpha_1-adrenergic receptors sex.

Promethazine is a neuroleptic medication and first-generation antihistamine of the phenothiazine family. The drug has strong sedative and weak antipsychotic effects. It also reduces motion sickness and has antiemetic and anticholinergic properties (via its action on the dopamine receptor D2). In some countries it is prescribed for insomnia when are contraindicated. It is available in many countries under many brand names. Promethazine was developed in the mid 1940s when a team of scientists from Rhône-Poulenc laboratories were able to synthesize it from phenothiazine and a diamine side chain of diphenhydramine.

3. For anesthesia and surgery before and after adjuvant therapy, including sedation, hypnosis, analgesia, antiemetic.
4. For the prevention and treatment of radiation sickness or drug-induced nausea and vomiting.

Use:

Promethazine is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting related to certain conditions (such as before/after surgery, motion sickness). It is also used to treat allergy symptoms such as rash, itching, and runny nose.
