Ropivacaine is a long-acting amide local anaesthetic with a potentially improved safety profile when compared to bupivacaine. Ropivacaine is less lipophilic than bupivacaine and is less likely to penetrate large myelinated motor fibres, resulting in a relatively reduced motor blockade.
