Chlorhexidine gluconate is a biguanidine chlorobenzene, which has a wide range of antimicrobial activities.  At pH5.0 to 8.0, it is most effective against Gram-positive (10mcg/ml) and Gram-negative (50mcg/ml) bacteria .
