Methylthiouracil, alias 6-methyl-2-thiouracil in Chinese, is an important pharmaceutical intermediate; not only does it have antibacterial activity, but it can also be used to treat hyperthyroidism. It is used to treat hyperthyroidism by inhibiting the production of thyroxine through the inhibition of the peroxidase system in the thyroid gland. Therefore, it is of great importance to optimize the synthesis process. The current synthesis method is mainly based on the condensation of ethyl acetoacetate and thioure a catalyzed by alkaline conditions, and the commonly used catalyst is sodium alcohol.
