What is Adipotide?
Prohibitin-targeting peptide 1 (also known as Prohibitin-TP01 and TP01; trade name Adipotide) is a peptide mimetic with the sequence CKGGRAKDC-GG-D (KLAKLAK) 2. Its mechanism of action is to target specific blood vessels that supply blood to fat tissue, causing the blood vessels to constrict and the fat cells that these vessels feed to undergo apoptosis. Adipotide is designed to bind to two receptors, ANXA2 (membrane mucin A2) and arrestin, that are specific for the blood vessels that supply white adipose tissue.
Adipotide kills fat cells by targeting their blood supply, plain and simple. Interestingly, this peptide is able to distinguish blood vessels in fat cells from blood vessels elsewhere in the body, making it highly selective. It can also enhance sensitivity and have a positive effect on type 2 diabetes.
