Phenolphthalein,also called 2,2-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)phthalide is  an organic compound with the chemical formula C20H14O4 used as indicator,  pharmaceuticals medcine eg: Treat habitual and intractable constipation and have a laxative effect. In short, phenolphthalein is mainly used as a laxative in clinical medicine and can be used to treat constipation.


Phenolphthalein is a weak organic acid, which is a colorless lactone structure in a solution of pH<8.2, and a red quinone structure when pH>8.2.
