The steel grade 1.4021(also called ASTM 420 and SS2303) is a high tensile strength martensitic stainless steel with good corrosion properties. The steel is machinable and suits good for production of details with good resistance to e.g. air water steam, freshwater, certain alkaline solutions and other mildly aggressive chemicals. It shall not be used in marine or in chloride environment. The steel is magnetic and in the quenched and tempered condition.
Some typical application areas for EN 1.4021:
Pump- and Valve parts
Shafting
Spindels
Piston rods
Fittings
Stirrers
Bolts
Nuts
Weldable steel for for machining
1.4021 is possible to weld and shall be welded with welding consumables similar to that of the parent one. The steel is generally easier to machine than "conventional" austenitic steels. The heat treatment condition of 1.4021 is QT 700 and it should be hot formed in the temperature range 1100-800°C. Slow cooling after hot forming.
