Sodium stearate   is sodium salt of stearic acid, also known as sodium octadecate, is commonly used anionic surfactants, the main component of soap. It is white powder with fatty odor, greasy to touch, soluble in hot water and ethanol. The alkyl part of sodium stearate molecule is hydrophobic and the carboxyl part is hydrophilic. In soapy water, sodium stearate exists as micelles, which are spherical and composed of many molecules. The hydrophobic groups are inwards and bind with each other by van der Waals forces. The hydrophilic groups are outwards and distributed on the surface of micelles.
