Fenofibrate increases high density lipoprotein levels by reducing cholesteryl ester transfer protein expression. It is used in treating the condition of increased cholesterol levels in the blood, abnormal lipid levels in the body and also hypertriglyceridaemia. Fenofibrate is a lipid regulating drug and proliferator-activated receptor-α (PPARα) mediates its action. It decreases the plasma levels of fibrinogen and C-reactive protein. By this fenofibrate allows better flow-mediated dilatation and reduces the risk of atherosclerosis. Fenofibrate is also known to reduce uric acid levels.

Function and Application of  Fenofibrate CAS 49562-28-9

1. In addition to its lipid-regulating effects, fenofibrate has anti-inflammatory, fibrinogen-lowering and prophylactic neuroprotective effects and is therefore also useful in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
2.  Fenofibrate inhibits the expression of tumour necrosis factor (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) factor monocytes through PPAR-α receptors and promotes tumour cell differentiation as well as apoptosis.
3. Fenofibrate is significantly more effective than statins in lowering TG and raising HDL-C. As simple dyslipidaemia is rare in diabetic patients, with a common lipid profile of increased TC, reduced HDL-C and elevated or normal LDL-C, fenofibrate is clinically effective in the treatment of dyslipidaemia in diabetic patients. In addition, its mechanism of action is different from that of statins, which can significantly reduce TC and LDL-C, and the combination of the two can have complementary effects. Therefore, the combination of fenofibrate with statins such as atorvastatin and simvastatin can be seen in clinical practice to adjust the lipid profile of patients with mixed hyperlipidaemia.
